Yanaka Pavilion
The project started with a folded paper study. The goal was to develop different ways to fold a piece of paper in order to make space out of it. It was also important to be able to show the module building process through diagrams. The form of the pavilion is derived from the last iteration of the paper module that was then developed to compliment the slope of the staircase.
Yanaka Ginza is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tokyo. In spite of Tokyo’s constantly evolving urban landscape, Yanaka has managed to remain more or less unchanged. It is now a cultural center for Tokyo and a destination for many locals and tourists. Because of its proximity to a train station, the Yanaka staircase has become a corridor for commuters to pass through. The goal for this pavilion is to make the staircase a destination for locals as well as tourists.
The result is a pavilion museum showcasing the historical significance of Yanaka Ginza not only for locals, but also for tourists. It is made to be walked through without interrupting the already existing movement of the staircase.
